The stairway at the Temple of Horus at Edfu is a sight to behold. The sun’s rays illuminate the ancient stone and cast light on the magnificent inscriptions.
Edfu Temple was built during the Ptolemaic Kingdom. To put this into context the Pyramids were already thousands of years old by the time Edfu Temple came along. The artisans who built it would have been inspired by the architecture of the Old Kingdom.
The complex was lost under drifting sands and silt until it was identified in 1860 when excavations began to reclaim it from the desert.
To walk up these stairs is to walk through history.
