When Tutankhamun ascended to the throne when he was 8 years old, the country was in turmoil?

Egypt was still recovering from his fathers (Akhenaten) decision to change Egypt’s traditional polytheism to monotheism (the worship of a singular god). It seems as though an adviser, Ay, reversed all of Akhenaten’s policies regarding monotheism and reinstated the worship of many gods. This curried favour with the people and stabilised Egypt’s rocky political climate. Things were looking up.

As Tut was so young, most of the policies at this time were enacted by his vizier and the officials around him. It wasn’t until he was older that he started making decisions for himself.

Tutankhamun died when he was 19. His reign was generally unremarkable. It is not his time as pharaoh that he is remembered for.

His intact tomb and masterpiece death mask made him a household name.
