This is the sarcophagus of Meritamun, daughter and later the wife of Ramesses the Great. She was the child of Ramesses favourite wife, Nefertari.
She lived during the 19th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, around 1255 BC. 3274 years ago.
As you can see, the face is carved with such finesse that it is hard to believe it is shaped out of wood. The face looks real. It’s as if Meritamun is going to step out of her sarcophagus and walk around, thousands of years after her death. Incredible!
Few Sarcophagi have come down to us in such excellent condition. The damage is minimal. The craftsmanship is on another level.
She was one of the most important people in Egypt at the time of her death. Now she lives forever.
