When Tutankhamun’s Tomb was cracked open in 1922 more than knowledge and treasure sprang out.

The curse of the pharaohs leapt forth and infused western culture with a sense of dread and foreboding. The people who were responsible all died terrible deaths, they said. Ships that carried Tutankhamun’s treasure sunk and all souls were lost, they said. The men who opened his tomb were found shortly afterwards dead in mysterious circumstances, they said.

But is any of it actually true?

Lord Carnarvon, who was with Howard Carter when the tomb was opened died shortly afterwards. Was this Tutankhamun’s wrath? Or was it an infected mosquito bite that developed into pneumonia? The latter is the official cause.

Is there any credence to the mummy curse? Or was it purely a way to sell more newspapers in the 1920s?
