Were there more huge Sphinx statues during the ancient Egyptian epoch?

There is a popular hypothesis that The Great Sphinx of Giza was actually one of two. A sister Sphinx has been rumoured to exist at some point during ancient times.

Apparently, according to the Greeks, Romans, Muslims and even the ancient Egyptians themselves, a second huge Sphinx was located on the opposite bank of The Nile.

This placement is thought to represent the invisible dividing line between Northern and Southern Egypt.

Since these kinds of monumental structures usually appeared in pairs it isn’t unreasonable to think that there was once a second Sphinx,

Where is it now?

If it did exist then it was either deliberately destroyed by invading forces or deconstructed by the Egyptians so that they could reuse the material in newer building projects.

So far, archaeologists have yet to find any evidence of its existence.
