An artist’s impression of a pharaoh, possibly Khufu or Khafre, being transported to his pyramid tomb.

As you can see, the causeway connects right up to the bank of The Nile. The dead pharaoh is transported via the river on a solar barge, encased in his splendid sarcophagus. His body would then be carried from the bank to the pyramid where he would face his eternal rest.

The whole affair would have been a hugely coordinated ceremony, with thousands of people attending. Of course, this is just one person’s take on an event that happened over 4,500 years ago.

Accuracy is not possible when history is this murky. The tomb was newly built and the people were finally seeing the pyramid’s purpose being fulfilled.
