Hindus believe that they should not eat non-vegetarian food on particular days like Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays of every week. They avoid non-vegetarian food even during auspicious days like Yekadashi, Sankranthi, Dussehra, Sankashti, Chaturthi, Angarki Chaturthi, Ekadashi, Gudhipadwa, Akshayatruthiya, and Diwali.


Religious belief on avoiding meat on certain days:

The main reason behind not eating non-vegetarian on particular days is purely religious. The killing of animals in Hinduism is a sin. People avoid eating meat on an auspicious day to main the sacredness of that particular day.


Hinduism has restricted to eat meat by assigning the days to maintain a specific diet. Monday is dedicated to Lord Shiva; Tuesday is dedicated to Lord Hanuman; Thursday is dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, and Lord SaiBaba and Saturdays are dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Lord Venkateshwara.


In some parts of India, even Wednesdays and Fridays are also dedicated to some Lords, and they left some days without committing to any Lords. In this way, people have assigned some restrictions according to Hinduism. As most of the Hindus are religious, they do obey these rules. By following these rules by restricting meat in their diet, they are maintaining good health.

There is another theory in which the followers of various Gods wanted their Gods to be declared as supreme. Hence, they said certain days to worship their Gods solely. When the vegetarian though flows down in Indian society, these days were declared as meat-free days.

The science behind avoiding meat in the diet on certain days:

An individual needs a little amount of meat to fulfill the requirements of the body, such as iron, vitamin B-12, and other essential nutrients. This is the main reason behind avoiding meet on weekdays like Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Human beings can get easily addicted to eating meat. If humans are about to consume an excessive amount of meat, it will create some health issues.


Eating an excessive amount of meat regularly can cause diseases like piles, kidney stones, colon cancer, blood pressure, and heart attack. People will also find it difficult to refrain from eating flesh. Hence, Hinduism has placed some religious restrictions by assigning days to maintain a proper diet.


The moon plays a vital role in our digestive system. People say that one should avoid meat on amaavash(new moon) and Saturdays. The digestive system will be a little weak during that time due to the moon's effect on the earth.


Hence, people stay away from eating non-vegetarian on those particular days. One can also calculate on the calendar that people avoid meat during Sashtti, Ekadashi and the new moon. Most of the people perform fasting on these days. This is an indirect way of cleansing our bodies.

People avoid eating meat during major festivals which falls during the last six months. Many people involve themselves in devotion and fasting activities. This is because non- vegetarian food makes our mind dull, but vegetarian food energizes our body, mind, and soul.


This energy will be diverted towards the religious activities and cleanses the aura. This will also help in creating a positive environment.
